About 9minds
Formed in late 2004, 9minds is gaining a dynamic reputation as a producer of new and celebrated Australian work. The company's first production, French Day, was performed to sell out audiences at the Melbourne MidSumma Festival in early 2005. Since then, 9minds has performed four times at the Arts Centre: Angels with Dirty Faces (BlackBox 2005, Fairfax Studio 2007), nominated for a Louis Esson Prize for Drama, Charlie (Fairfax Studio 2006, Melbourne Short & Sweet Top 30) and Kill the Wolf (BlackBox 2008). The new play After was read at the Carlton Courthouse as part of MelBorn Top 30 (2007), and the new play Donate for Gold at the Seymour Centre as a finalist in Sydney’s Short, Sweet & Song (2008). 9minds also brought the iconic Blackrock to the Gasworks main theatre stage in 2006, and associate produced the new award winning play Ollie and the Minotaur at fortyfivedownstairs with Adelaide theatre company floogle in early 2008.
From September 2008, 9minds presents 9minds9works 2008/2009, monthly play readings showcasing local writing at the Arts Centre. The season features some of Australia’s most exciting new and established playwrights (in order of readings): Gareth Ellis, Noëlle Janaczewska, Alex Broun, Jane Harrison, Kevin McGrath, Lally Katz, Ross Mueller, Kit Lazaroo, and Anthony Crowley. Introduced in 2006, 9minds9works reflects a commitment by 9minds to support Australian playwriting. Kill the Wolf and Ollie and the Minotaur were developed through the 2006/2007 program.
Our interest is in stories. Stories about who we are and the world in which we live. This reflects in productions that are sometimes gritty, exciting, eye opening, and undoubtedly riveting.
No one, to our knowledge, has started a theatre company to make money! We started the company, because of our passion for theatre. Unsurprisingly, we find that the people who work with us, largely share this passion.
Even with tough budgets, it has been 9minds policy from our first production, to pay honorariums to all creative team members and cast members working on our plays.

We believe this is an important, though inadequate, acknowledgement of the hard work done by very talented people for the company. We thank them for their work, which has been an integral part of 9minds' development.
As a new company, feedback is important to us, assisting us to evaluate our development. We are happy to pass on correspondence to our patrons and board, on request. If you have comments, questions, or suggestions, regarding 9minds, please >>email us.
